Patches Quilt and Fiber Shop

PennWest Clarion SBDC Client Success Story
Stitching Community Together

Julie Satterfield is turning her passion for quilting and fiber arts into a thriving business with the launch of Patches Quilt and Fiber Shop in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. With a vision of creating more than just a retail space, Julie set out to build a welcoming environment where individuals could gather, learn, and share their creativity.

""As she began exploring the idea of opening her own shop, Julie connected with the PennWest Clarion SBDC to better understand what it takes to start a business. Through one-on-one consulting and training, she gained valuable insight into business planning, market research, and the steps required to successfully launch. She also attended the First Step: Starting a Small Business in Pennsylvania seminar, which helped her build a strong foundation and confidence in moving forward.

“My experience working with the SBDC has helped me feel supported and like I could succeed. Thank you for all your help.”

With guidance from the SBDC, Julie worked through key startup decisions, including selecting a location in downtown Kittanning, developing her business model, and identifying multiple revenue streams. In addition to retail sales of fabric, yarn, and sewing supplies, she incorporated classes and group activities to attract and retain customers, with plans to expand into custom quilting and equipment offerings in the future.

After months of preparation, Patches Quilt and Fiber Shop officially opened in March 2026. The response from the community was immediate, with strong customer turnout and engagement from local and regional sewing guilds. On opening day alone, the business nearly generated enough revenue to cover its monthly rent—an early indicator of demand and long-term potential.

Today, Patches Quilt and Fiber Shop is quickly becoming a hub for the local crafting community. Through her dedication and the support of the SBDC, Julie has successfully transformed her passion into a business that not only generates income but also fosters creativity and connection throughout the region.
