Everlong Records: Building a Community Through Music, Movies, and Coffee
When Nicole Lohman and Adam Kunkelman relocated to Reading, PA, they dreamed of creating a business that fused their passion for music, movies, art, and coffee while fostering community engagement. Their vision was to develop Everlong Records, a unique record store featuring a coffee bar, designed as a gathering space for enthusiasts of physical media and specialty coffee.
“The SBDC truly helped us with every step in starting our business. We couldn’t have done it without them. Mark was especially amazing—always friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to answer all our questions.”
Nicole and Adam faced numerous obstacles, including navigating the complexities of starting a business and finding an affordable location that met their needs. Coming from modest backgrounds, they initially felt starting a business was beyond their reach. After being turned down for a loan by Wells Fargo due to a lack of business history, they turned to the Kutztown University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for help.
With the support of consultants Mark Rentschler, Annie Whalen, and Simba Mekani, the couple gained the tools and confidence to launch Everlong Records. The SBDC aided in developing their business plan, creating financial projections, and securing an SBA 7(a) loan from M&T Bank to start their business. The consultants also guided them in preparing their loan package and offered actionable advice throughout the process. “The SBDC truly helped us with every step in starting our business,” Nicole said. “We couldn’t have done it without them. Mark was especially amazing—always friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to answer all our questions.”
The journey to open Everlong Records took 11 months, including the search for the perfect location and necessary renovations. The store has created a space where customers can immerse themselves in music and art while enjoying a cup of coffee. This endeavor has already created one new job and promises to be a valuable addition to the community. Following a soft opening, a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Saturday, May 3rd.
Everlong Records stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Nicole and Adam, as well as the invaluable resources provided by the SBDC. Their story underscores how a clear vision, hard work, and access to the right support can transform a dream into reality.
