Resources for Buying, Selling & Transitioning a Business

Buying or selling a business can take many forms. Depending on your goals, you may also benefit from specialized resources focused on business acquisition, succession planning, franchise ownership, employee ownership, or cooperative business models. The Pennsylvania SBDC can help you assess your options, prepare for a transition, and connect with additional resources when appropriate.

  • BEAM Collaborative (Business Acquisition & Succession Planning):
BEAM Collaborative helps business owners take the first step in succession planning by exploring their goals, understanding potential transition options, and assessing readiness for what comes next. Through education, valuation insight, and transition planning tools, BEAM can help owners begin thinking through the future of their business. From there, Pennsylvania SBDC consultants can continue working with business owners on the broader planning and preparation needed to move forward, including financial analysis, business planning, financing considerations, buyer or successor readiness, and other transition needs.
  • FranNet (Franchise Ownership):
FranNet provides no-cost guidance to individuals exploring franchise ownership. Franchise consultants can help prospective buyers understand the franchise model, assess potential fit, explore franchise opportunities, and navigate the research and due diligence process.
  • Keystone Development Center (Cooperative Ownership):
Keystone Development Center supports the development and growth of cooperatively owned businesses. Its technical assistance can help businesses and groups explore cooperative ownership models, including situations where employees or other stakeholders may be considering a cooperative structure as part of a business transition.
  • Pennsylvania Center for Employee Ownership (Employee Ownership & ESOPs):
The Pennsylvania Center for Employee Ownership (PaCEO) helps Pennsylvania businesses learn about employee ownership as a potential succession or transition strategy. PaCEO provides education, resources, and connections to experienced professionals for business owners interested in exploring ESOPs and other forms of employee ownership.
