Dr. Jorge Rivero’s family emigrated from Cuba when he was 8 years old. He took advantage of a new life filled with opportunities and started his medical career.

He is in the area of pain medicine and after working for many years for medical centers, Dr. Rivero decided to start his own practice - Vital Pain Center.

Challenges or Obstacles Faced

If you work for somebody else and then you want to go on your own, there are certain changes you have to do in order to adjust to being alone. The client approached the Duquesne University SBDC to seek business assistance. The Center helps aspiring entrepreneurs, who come from a formalized 8 to 5 workplace, and make them focus on their new business venture.

SBDC Assistance

Dr. Rivera attended business seminars in English and Spanish at the Duquesne University SBDC, as well as received financial business plan assistance to make sure the business is profitable and sustainable. In addition, the client received marketing research information and feedback about the details of the new business venture.

Impact and Results

Client opened his medical business services office focusing on pain medicine in the Mt. Lebanon, PA area. His initial investment exceeds $100,000. The client is also serving the surrounding Hispanic population.
