Jennifer Low and her husband Sean Williams opened the Frosted Fox Cake Shop at 6511 Germantown Avenue in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia in November 2015. They make artisanal cakes for weddings and other special occasions as well as cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other treats for drop-in visitors. By Spring 2016, the bakery reached profitability and had garnered a steady and increasing customer base.
Jennifer and Sean were working to ensure that this was the culmination of their dreams, their many years of education, work experience in the food industry, investment from friends and family, and a lot of detailed work preparing for their start-up. Jennifer had loved pastry making and baking since she was young and had worked in several businesses in Philadelphia during high school and college. She and Sean met and became fast friends at the Culinary Institute of America where she studied baking and pastry arts. After the CIA, Jennifer first worked in pastry at the Night Kitchen Bakery and later for John and Kira’s Chocolates; Sean went into high-end corporate catering.
When they committed to starting Frosted Fox Cake Shop, they began by working on their business plan at Wharton Small Business Development Center and by enlisting the support of their family and friends. They were scrupulous in financial planning and in getting their store front adapted to their dreams and their financial needs.
Sales have built steadily. Now they are preparing to work with Wharton SBDC once again – to plan further marketing and sales campaigns and to take Frosted Fox Cake Shop to the “next level.”
