Mykal Kousins served proudly in the Navy for 22 years, working mostly in logistics and distribution. After his retirement in 2011, Mykal and his wife Christine moved to the Pittsburgh region for Mykals job in the oil and gas field. After several years working in the industry they decided it was time to look into owning their own business. The Kousins did research on a number of differing business opportunities, but came back to the growing elderly population in Western Pennsylvania, in fact Pennsylvania has the 3rd largest aging population in the US. This along with Christine’s background as a certified nurse assistant made looking into a senior care business a natural fit. They assessed all of their options and determined that a franchise would be a good way to get started. After looking into the differing senior care franchises available it seemed that FirstLight Home Care was a great fit for what they were looking to accomplish.
The road from concept to launch involved time, research, and patience. Mr. Kousins self-funded the initial franchise fee and training to obtain the territory, but still needed additional funding in order to pay for initial worker salaries and expenses. The University of Pittsburgh worked with Mykal throughout the pre-venture and startup process. Working through franchise documents and estimates to put together a package for the banks, as well as working with Mykal on a growth and business plan.
Mykal and his wife found their final office location in McMurray, PA. The University of Pittsburgh SBDC helped them to identify potential funders and apply for funds. In early 2016 Mykal and Christine officially launched their business through their own funding. In addition to their own investment they were approved for a loan in the amount of $73,000 from Bridgeway Capital. Mykal is also a certified veteran owned small business or SDVOSB.
Mykal and Christine are now on their way to growing their business and serving the elderly and their families throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.
