Hobby Turns into Small Business Dream in Mayfield: From Drab to Fab

    • from drab to fab grand opening

In early 2014, owner, Shiloh Richner, started painting and refinishing old furniture as a hobby in her home. It did not take long before her friends and family started to notice the excellent quality of her work. As her hobby grew, it started taking up more and more of her time and space in her basement.

In the fall of 2015, Shiloh decided to find a retail location giving her the space needed to refinish and sell the hand painted furniture. Her showroom is full of hand painted finds from end tables and armoires to bed frames and dining room tables. When a piece is sold, Shiloh wastes no time to replace the piece that was sold with a new piece of furniture. With the help of social media, Shiloh reaches customers from Honesdale to Wilkes Barre. In October 2015, From Drab to Fab opened.

Aside from the furniture, Shiloh also hosts paint parties for small groups where she teaches customers the step-by-step process of painting furniture. Clients can also purchase custom made chalk paint hand mixed by Shiloh to create one of a kind pieces at their own homes.

After finding a location on Route 6 in Mayfield, Shiloh contacted the University of Scranton Small Business Development Center to assist her with start-up assistance, hosting a ribbon cutting and internet and social media marketing assistance.
