In the fall of 2011, the flood waters from Tropical Storm Lee devastated the salon and spa where Silvana Graziano had been working for several years to the point where the owner decided not to reopen the business. Having the dream of one day opening her own salon and spa, Silvana Graziano decided that now was as good a time as any to open.
She contacted the Wilkes University Small Business Development Center in early 2012 and she began the process of learning the steps necessary to open a business in Pennsylvania. Graziano began searching for a location that would not only accommodate the business, but one that would be convenient for her existing customers, as well as, attract new customers.
After much searching, Graziano found what she thought would be the ideal location and she began to write her business plan based on purchasing the building. Once she gave the financial information to the SBDC and financials were formulated, it was determined that thiswas too big of a financial risk, based on her projected revenue.
In fairly short time, Graziano found her current location, which she rents. This eliminated the need of bank financing as she was able to use money she had saved to make renovations and purchase equipment. Graziano opened the doors to Image of Beauty Salon & Spa in August of 2013.
To set herself apart from other salons in the area, Graziano offers children’s parties which have been a big hit. Additionally, she offers in-home party packages and wedding day packages. A unique service that she offers to men and women is the application of Halloween make-up. All of her services are updated regularly through her Facebook page.
The SBDC organized a grand opening event for Silvana that was a great kick-start for her business. Several elected officials and bankers participated in the ribbon cutting photo which was then distributed to and published in local newspapers.
Graziano has maintained a very steady business and is on target for reaching her sales goals.
