BX3, Inc. was formed in 2006 as a partnership between William H. Kelley Sr. and William Kelley Jr. as a way for the younger Kelley to return to Montrose to raise his family in the beautiful area where he grew up. Never did they expect the economic boom that was about to hit the area with the development of the Marcellus Shale gas.

In 2008, a representative from a gas company entered their store and they started doing business with the industry. From there, the business grew very quickly and the company built their reputation as “the relentless problem solvers.” If they did not have a product, they worked diligently to get it, a concept that lent very well to the gas industry’s 24/7, fast-paced environment.

The company experienced tremendous growth over the next several years, from two employees to eighteen, as well as the addition of a second store in Tunkhannock. Even with this growth, the Kelleys remained committed to the quality of their brand and the top notch customer service that was so important to their continued success. After serving as a guest speaker at the University of Scranton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Shale 101 for Small Business Program in September 2012, Mr. Kelley, Sr. approached the SBDC to learn more about the services that might benefit his company. An SBDC business consultant met Mr. Kelley, Sr. at his store in Montrose. The Kelleys were ready to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the business and develop a strategic plan for the company, and the SBDC was ready to help.

The SBDC began by performing a companywide SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This was followed by an in-depth employee interview process to further explore the items identified in the SWOT analysis. Finally, the information was analyzed and a report was presented to the Kelleys to use in developing their strategic plan.

Since the engagement started, BX3, Inc. has continued to grow, adding additional support staff and purchasing a new location in Tunkhannock that supports the future growth and vision of the company in that market. In addition, they have worked with the employees on several of the recommended initiatives identified in the analysis to help strengthen the company.
