The owner of Columbia County Bread and Granola, Doug Michael, began his business by making and selling sprouted grain bread. As this bread gained popularity, Michael expanded his offerings to include flatbread and granola. This flax-based, oat-free granola caught the attention of Lyn Genet, a nutritionist in New York City.

Michael saw his company's sales steadily grow, and contacted Wilkes University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to work on a long-term expansion plan for the company. The SBDC worked with Michael on the expansion plan, as well as a marketing plan, to increase distribution channels for his products. Michael implemented the plan to expand operations in his current location.

Michael's granola product was eventually featured in Lyn Genet's book, The Plan, which quickly became a New York Times Bestseller. The author specifically talked about the benefits of CCBG granola when she appeared on Dr. OZ, a nationally syndicated talk show with a focus on health issues. Within 24 hours of this television exposure, CCBG granola orders increased tenfold. While the business has been able to fulfill the dramatic sales increase with the expanded operations in the current facility running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Michael and his team met with the SBDC to work on an additional expansion plan that can be implemented relatively quickly.

The SBDC is working with this exciting high growth company to structure financing for this expansion, and to develop a longer term plan for the client's substantial growth.
