Universal Remediation

Established in 2004, Universal Remediation manufactures a green product that bio-remediates hydrocarbons such as oil, diesel, and gasoline. They use all natural ingredients that stimulate indigenous microbes which in turn eat the hydrocarbons and leave nothing behind except carbon dioxide.

Due to a high number of foreign inquiries, it was decided to allocate more resources toward international business as there is a vast opportunity in these foreign markets, especially Brazil. The recent discovery of oil and a vast oil reserve has created an “Oil Boom,” therefore, the need for our product to help protect their environment.

To capitalize on this opportunity the company turned to the Global Business Program at the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to obtain information and training to be successful in the global market.

Owner Dave Casey attended many programs offered by the Duquesne University SBDC, including Export Basics, and Export Financing and Regulations. He also received one-on-one consulting to help develop an Export Plan to pursue international opportunities.

The key to global business for a company like Universal Remediation is to find a distributor or representative that can take their product through the various regulatory agencies within the country. Patience is also a key factor. Representation development and regulatory approval takes time, but once the process was completed, the orders started to flow. After finding a Brazilian distributor and obtaining the product approval by the Brazilian Government, their exports grew from 10% in 2010 to 70% of total sales for 2011.

David said, “The SBDC has always been there for us and we appreciate their help. The Individual attention as well as the group events have been instrumental in the growth of our international business.”
