REV Sports Rehab & Athletic Development

Nearly two years ago, Aimee Slattery and Frank Velasquez met through a mutual acquaintance. It didn’t take long for them to realize they had much in common and had very similar philosophies on physical therapy and the development of performance athletes. At the time Aimee was an independent rehab specialist, and Frank the strength and conditioning coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In October 2011, Frank and Aimee made the decision to move forward on a vision they had developed for the premier performance and rehab facility in the region.

Aimee and Frank began the process of developing a business plan, but quickly realized they needed some professional guidance on how to go about developing a plan not only for themselves but for banks and investors. They reached out to the University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for assistance. Frank and Aimee quickly engaged with the SBDC and began refining their business plan and model. The University of Pittsburgh SBDC assisted in evaluating location options, understanding the target market and demographics and developing a marketing strategy. A second key area of assistance was in the development of financial projections and a feasibility analysis to assess the opportunity.

The University of Pittsburgh SBDC consultant worked closely with Frank and Aimee over a two month period to prepare them for conversations with a personal investor as well as local banks in an effort to raise the $160,000 it would take to start the business. The SBDC also provided the banking connections to begin loan discussions.

With University of Pittsburgh SBDC guidance, REV successfully secured $60,000 in private investment and $100,000 in bank investment from PNC Bank in early 2012. After a two month build out of their new space in Cranberry Township, REV Sports Rehab and Athletic Development opened its doors in April 2012. REV now gainfully employs 4 full time employees and 2 interns.

The company continues to use the University of Pittsburgh SBDC as a resource, meeting and communicating on a regular basis to ensure they are on a path to success during the critical early stages of the company’s life. The community has embraced the new business and REV is poised for great success in the future.
