Overview

Marcellus Shale is a geological formation that was formed by the accumulation of sediment into a sea. This formation was eventually buried over many thousands of years and compressed to produce an organic-rich black shale. This geological formation stretches from the Northeast to the Southwest in direction.

The Marcellus Shale has been identified as a potentially rich source of fossil fuels and the extraction of this natural gas is an economic development opportunity for Pennsylvania.

Shale gas has both given opportunity to local drilling-related companies, some of whom have sought assistance from the SBDC, but also the regional heavy equipment companies and a range of other businesses from restaurants and hotels to service and construction companies.
