September is National Preparedness Month and the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) are reminding all small business owners about the importance of business continuity.  As part of National Preparedness Month, company management are encouraged to tune into webinars available throughout the month of September to educate themselves on current business continuity matters.

To deal with a crisis or major disaster, having a business continuity plan is essential to establishing a successful and resilient small business. The cost of creating a disaster preparedness plan is small compared to the financial losses that may occur if there’s no plan in place.

Business owners can get help with their own preparedness planning through a series of free webinars in September hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and Agility Recovery.  The series is presented in collaboration with FEMA’s Ready Campaign, during National Preparedness Month (NPM).  The 2015 NPM theme is “Don’t Wait.  Communicate. Make your emergency plan Today.”

30-minute webinars will be presented at 2:00 p.m. EDT each Wednesday in September on the following topics:

  • September 9: “The Keystone to Disaster Recovery: Communications”
  • September 16: “Recover from the Most Likely Disaster: Power Outage”
  • September 23: “Protect Your Most Valuable Asset: Prepare Your Employees”
  • September 30: “If You Do Nothing Else this Year…” Simple tips to build your organization’s resilience.

To register for any of the webinars, visit http://agilityrecovery.com/buildingblocks/#section-register.

SBA has partnered with Agility Recovery to offer business continuity strategies through their “PrepareMyBusiness” website. Visit www.preparemybusiness.org to access past webinars and additional disaster preparedness tools.

The Pennsylvania SBDC hopes that all small businesses are prepared to handle potential disruptions if they come and to take advantage of all resources offered during National Preparedness Month. To check for further updates, check out http://www.ready.gov/september.

Businesses are encouraged to visit the Pennsylvania SBDC’s Business Continuity Resource Links to find resources for preparing their business for a potential weather interruption.   Small businesses who want to take the next step should contact their local SBDC to discuss Business Continuity and Survival Services available to assist their company.
