Pennsylvania SBDC Announces Catherine Tyson as 2013 State Star

Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) have announced that Catherine Tyson of the University of Pittsburgh SBDC has been awarded the 2013 State Star for Pennsylvania.  Tyson was awarded during a ceremony at the America’s SBDC Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida in September.

“Over her long tenure with the SBDC, Catherine has shown adaptability to evolve and respond to new directions within the program.  The innovative ways that business consultants, such as Catherine, handle the complex issues they encounter are why our clients start, grow and succeed at such exceptional rates,” said Conroy.   “We are proud to recognize Catherine for her outstanding client service and dedication to the Pennsylvania SBDC program,” he concluded.

Employed with the University of Pittsburgh SBDC for nearly two decades, Tyson serves as the manager of the Emerging Enterprise Program, where she oversees ten students that assist her in her client work.  Tyson’s nomination lauded her dedication saying that no matter what is happening, she always thinks about her business clients first insuring that each client is treated and offered the same level of service.

Each quarter, University of Pittsburgh SBDC Director Ray Vargo randomly contacts a number of the consulting team’s clients to hear in the client’s own words how they feel their engagement is progressing and the quality of the service they are receiving.  “Consistently when I talk to Catherine's clients they rave about the quality of service she provides but more importantly they emphasize that they truly feel that Catherine cares about their business,” he stated.

Annually, one top performer from each state within the national network of SBDCs is recognized for their contributions to their SBDC program and is awarded the State Star designation at America’s SBDC Annual Conference.  Employees are chosen for their exemplary performance, making a significant contribution to their state or regional SBDC program and for showing a strong commitment to small business.
