The Pennsylvania and Delaware Cleaners Association (PDCA) was selected as the winner of the 2013 Trade Association Environmental Leadership Award given by the Small Business Ombudsman/Small Business Environmental Assistance Programs (SBO/SBEAPs).  The nomination was submitted by the Pennsylvania SBDC’s Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP) and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

This award recognizes exemplary performance and leadership by a trade association to enhance members' compliance with applicable environmental regulations and to encourage stewardship of the environment.  PDCA was presented with the award at the 2013 Annual 507 Program Training meeting in Chicago by LaRonda Bowen, Small Business Ombudsman for California.

PDCA was lauded for their work in helping dry cleaners understand and meet the regulations in Philadelphia and for their assistance to dry cleaners with the Pennsylvania Small Business Advantage Grant program.  PDCA Executive Director Carol Memberg accepted the award at the conference.

The PDCA and EMAP have a strong working relationship.  PDCA regularly refers dry cleaners with environmental compliance issues to EMAP for assistance and provides EMAP with a booth at their annual Dry cleaning and Laundry Expo where dry cleaners can learn more about Pennsylvania’s environmental regulations from EMAP consultants.  EMAP also worked with the PDCA and DEP to include a Korean translation of the instructions for the dry clean compliance calendar.  The PDCA also worked with the City of Philadelphia, Department of Public Health, Air Management Services and EMAP to provide free compliance assistance workshops to help dry cleaners understand the new emission regulations in Philadelphia which greatly reduced the use of perchloroethylene, a chemical commonly used in the dry cleaning process.
