Wharton SBDC to Participate in Public Hearing on Global Opportunities and Economic Development in Philadelphia

On Tuesday, October 9, Therese Flaherty, PhD, Director of the Wharton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will participate in a public hearing on how to take advantage of global opportunities to spur economic development in Philadelphia.  The hearings will be held over two days: Tuesday, October 9 at 1:00 p.m. and Wednesday, October 10 at 1:00 p.m. in Council Chambers Room 400 of Philadelphia City Hall.

Flaherty will discuss entrepreneurship and development of second-stage growth businesses that are able to generate exports and international interest.  She will represent non-government economic development entities invited to participate in the hearing.  Besides the Wharton SBDC, based at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, other organizations participating during this section include the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia, Manufacturing Alliance of Philadelphia, Select Greater Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Visitors and Convention Bureau.

The Committee on Global Opportunities & Creative/Innovative Economy of the Council of the City of Philadelphia is jointly holding the hearings with Senator Mike Brubaker, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Senate International Commerce Caucus.

The purpose of the hearings is to investigate Philadelphia’s business climate for expanding international trade and investment, supporting innovation, and promoting global partnerships.  The committee plans to identify innovative strategies, including a legislative platform, for increasing Philadelphia’s global competitiveness in the global economy.
